Carlos started to play golf with his father at the Guadalajara Country Club, home club of LPGA great Lorena Ochoa whose dedication to the sport inspired him when he was a kid. For him golf is “the most challenging sport to play” and it gives him the biggest thrill when in competition. Carlos earned his fully exempt status on the PGA Tour as a three-time, single-season winner on the Web.com Tour in 2014. With his victory at the 2021 Vivint Houston Open Carlos became the third Mexican to win on the PGA Tour in 42 years. His dream foursome would include Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Carlos supports charitable foundations like the La Barranca in his hometown of Guadalajara.

Interview with Carlos Ortiz

WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING GOLF?

My father gave me my first clubs when I was three years old, but I started to play seriously at the age of eight.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOR YOU IN LIFE?

No doubt, my family. I love to spend freetime with my wife Haley, my daughters Sofia and Mila and soon with No. 3. Being a dad has been a complete different feeling and am always grateful to spend time with my girls.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOBBY?

I like many other sports, but I really like anything with and or around water such as fishing or just hang out at the beach.

DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BECOME A GOLF PROFESSIONAL?

No. As a young kid I started playing football, but I soon realized that golf is most challenging for me.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL GOLFER?

After I went to college I realized that I had what it takes to be a professional.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS YOUR KEY TO SUCCESS?

I always try to push my limits – every day.
